Stirling Energy Systems

Stirling Energy Systems (SES) was located in Arizona and developed equipment for utility-scale renewable energy power plants as well as for distributed solar systems. In 2011, Stirling filed for Chapter 7 Bankruptcy in the United States, which is a liquidation process. All company assets were sold and the money gained returned to creditors.

The major reason for the failure of SES was its focus on dish-solar systems and Stirling engine designs, which could not compete either on a distributed scale or on at a utility scale with standard PV systems or CSP systems such as power towers and parabolic troughs. The individual Stirling engines for each dish were too expensive to produce compared to other systems.
